Navigating the many wonderful schools in the Charleston area can feel like a daunting task. There are many factors to consider when exploring a private school or charter school. You will have opinions from your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers; you may have heard musings in the community; you or your spouse may have grown up in Charleston and as alums already possess strong opinions and loyalties. Regardless of outside influence, it is critically important to examine each school separately from the perspective of how your child learns and what environment will support his/her full potential and foster a love of learning.

School leadership can change; curricula and learning opportunities evolve; teaching expertise continues to progress. One thing that usually stays the same is a school’s mission and educational focus. Most schools work hard to stay abreast of best teaching practices and to offer an environment suited to a diverse learning population. However, some schools have a more specialized focus, specific to their mission, and some work to provide a solid path for children with learning differences like dyslexia, dysgraphia, or autism spectrum disorder. In this area, all schools do not look the same. It is vitally important to know what is available so that your child’s particular needs are actually addressed, especially if certain academic accommodations are necessary to support their progress.

Private schools have various accreditations; it is important to know and understand them and their levels of applicability. Most schools have a detailed website with specific admissions criteria and processes. Take time to examine them thoroughly and make notes of important meetings and deadlines. Most educators understand that a child with learning differences does not necessarily mean having a low IQ, and do their best to provide resources to help all learners. That said, not every school is the right fit for every child.
